APN Honors Armenian Veterans at Diocesan Headquarters

Under the auspices of the Primate of the Western Diocese, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, the Armenian Professionals Network of the Western Diocese, held a special event to honor the Armenian Veterans on the occasion of Veterans’ Day, on Sunday, November 11, 2007, at the Diocesan Headquarters.

The Veterans’ Day celebration was officially opened by the invocation offered by His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese. His Eminence praised the noteworthy initiative of APN for honoring, especially, the Veterans of the WWII, who continue to inspire us all through their courageous actions in defense of our country. In his opening remarks he called upon all to honor the memory of all those who gave their lives for the freedom of the United States of America.

Leo Keligian conducted the event. There were several decorated veterans in uniform that carried the flags to the Kalaydjian Hall. The national anthems of the United States and the Republic of Armenia were performed during the ceremony.

Congressman Adam Schiff, the great friend of the Armenian American community, attended the event. California Supreme Court Justice Armand Arabian and Burbank City Councilman, Honorable David Gordon were also present during the ceremony.

A brief historic representation about the American veterans of the Armenian decent and their role in the Armed Forces of the United States was presented by the Keynote Speaker, Mr. Arthur Avazian, Esq. The Guest Speaker of the day, 86 years old, Ret. U.S. Air Force 1st Lieutenant, Mike Hartunian offered an interesting account of his service and wealth of experience from the WWII era.

Salpi Darakjian recited “Song of Liberty” by Michael Nalbandian and “My Tears” by Siamanto. Edward Minasian, the author of “Musa Dagh” was introduced by Raffi Kendirjian, the treasurer of the APN.

Arthur Zabounian, President of APN Executive Committee, in his closing comments expressed his appreciation to the Primate. He also thanked all those who were involved in organizing the event.Â

Rev. Fr. Archpriest Sipan Mekhsian offered the closing remarks in thanking APN for organizing the event that has become an annual tradition, stressing the historic loyalty of Armenians who have shown to their adopted countries.
