Primates Pastoral Visit to Desert Community

March 29, 2007 —

On March 20^th, 2007, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese made a pastoral visit to the Armenian Community of Palm Desert and met with the parish council to discuss the construction of the new church as well as the assignment of a permanent pastor to the community.

Los Angeles Council of Religious Leaders Monthly Meeting

March 29, 2007 —

On March 21^st, 2007, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian hosted the monthly meeting of the Los Angeles Council of Religious Leaders, during which he discussed the 80^th Anniversary of the Western Diocese and its schedule of celebrations.

Primate Presides Over Lenten Services at St. John Garabed

March 29, 2007 —

On March 21^st, 2007, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian presided over and delivered the sermon during the Lenten service in St. John Garabed Armenian Church of Hollywood.

Primate Presides Over Etchmiadzin Children’s Fund Meeting

March 29, 2007 —

On March 22^nd, 2007 His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian presided over the Etchmiadzin Children’s Fund (ECF) Executive Committee meeting. During the meeting he introduced the committee to the plans to sponsor a new orphanage in Armenia recently adopted by the Western Diocese. ECF has pledged to contribute $30,000 annually to the orphanage which will be operated under the supervision of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. His Eminence also offered his sincere congratulations to the committee for their successful annual fundraising event which took place in January.

Diocesan Sub-committee’s Meeting

March 29, 2007 — On the evening of March 22^nd, 2007, His Eminence presided over a meeting of the leaders of the Diocese’s various sub-committees and auxiliary bodies.

Primate Attends “Passage of India”

March 29, 2007 —

On March 23^rd, 2007, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian attended an event entitled “Passage of India” organized by the Paradon Committee of the AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian Day School. The event was in support of the school and was chaired by Mr. Vicken Gulvartian.

Southern California Regional Meeting

March 29, 2007 —

On March 24^th, 2007 the first Diocesan regional meeting of 2007 took place at St. John Garabed Armenian Church of Hollywood. During the meeting, the Parish Councils in attendance were given an extensive report of Diocesan activities as well as the 80^th Anniversary celebrations. They were also given ample time to discuss matters related to their respective parishes.

Primates Pastoral Visit to Las Vegas

March 29, 2007 — On March 24 & 25, 2007, His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian made a pastoral visitation to the annual reception of the Las Vegas community. During the reception Mr. and Mrs. Haig Adamian, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Avakian, Mr. and Mrs. Sarkis Frungian, and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Ladah were honored by the Primate for their continued support and dedication to the Armenian Church. The following day, Divine Liturgy was celebrated by the Primate. In his sermon, His Eminence commended Very Rev. Fr. Asbed Balian and the members of the Parish Council and stressed the importance of building a house of worship for the community

Oriental Orthodox Church Youth Leaders Gather for Spiritual Day

March 29, 2007 — On Saturday March 24^th, 2007, the youth of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church, the Western Prelacy of the Armenian Church and the Coptic and Syriac Dioceses gathered for a one day long spiritual retreat.

ACYO Hosts Successful First Annual Junior Retreat

March 29, 2007 —

On the weekend of March 23^th, 2007, 45 junior ACYO members from several parishes gathered at the Coptic Village retreat center to participate in the first annual ACYO Junior Retreat. The topic of the retreat was the “Holy Week in the Life of Juniors.” Dn. Kevork Halladjian was in attendance and led the prayer services and various classes throughout the weekend. The event was successful due to the dedication of the ACYO Central Council responsible for planning and executing it as well as the support of many ACYO parents.

Nor Hayastan Daily Celebrates 15th Anniversary

On Sunday 25^th, 2007, Rev. Fr. Sipan Mekhsian, chancellor of the Western Diocese, represented the Primate at the 15^th Anniversary of Nor Hayastan newspaper and conveyed the best wishes of the primate to the editor.

UCLA Honors Prominent Writer Berj Zeitountsiants

March 29, 2007 —

A reception was held in honor of prominent writer Berj Zeitountsiats at the campus of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and was hosted by the Chair of the Armenian Studies Department. Representing the Primate was Rev. Fr. Zaven Arzoumanian who conveyed congratulations on behalf of the Primate.

Harut Sassounian Honored by Armenian Community

March 26, 2007 — "An Evening Honoring Harut Sassounian" was held at the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America on Sunday, March 18, 2007. On this occasion, more than 500 community leaders and friends attended a program and reception to pay tribute to Harut Sassounian for his effective and compassionate leadership as President of the United Armenian Fund and Vice President of the Lincy Foundation. He was also honored for his contributions in the field of journalism, as the Publisher of the California Courier newspaper.

Western Diocese Mourns Prime Minister of Armenia

March 25, 2007 — It is with deep sorrow that the Western Diocese inform its faithful that the Prime Minister of Armenia, Andranik Margarian passed away today at the age of 56 from heart attack in his apartment.

LA City Attorney to Recognize and Celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the Western Diocese

March 23, 2007 — Los Angeles City Attorney, Rocky Delgadillo will receive His Eminence Abp. Hovnan Derderian, clergy of the Western Diocese, and esteemed guests in his office to celebrate the 80^th Anniversary of the establishment of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church.

ACYO Junior Retreat to Be Held This Weekend

March 23, 2007 — he Western Diocese and its Armenian Church Youth Organization (ACYO) eagerly anticipates its first major Junior Retreat to be held March 24-25, 2007, at the Coptic Village Retreat Center in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Oriental Orthodox Churches Youth Leadership Retreat to Take Place

March 23, 2007 — On Saturday March 24, 2007, youth from the Oriental Orthodox Sister Churches will gather at the STM to participate in a day long retreat regarding leadership in the Church as well as lent.

80th Annual Diocesan Assembly in Pasadena

March 22, 2007 — The Pastor, Parish Council, Host Committee and all organizations of St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Apostolic Church of Pasadena are honored to host the 80^th Annual Diocesan Assembly, Clergy Conference and Ladies’ Society Assembly of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church from May 2-5, 2007.This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Western Diocese, established formally 80 years ago, on November 28, 1927, by an Encyclical issued from the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin by His Holiness Kevork V, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians.

48TH ANNUAL FERNANDO AWARD

March 12, 2007 — For the Greater Los Angeles area Armenian community it was a gratifying occasion, when on March 2, 2007 in the evening at the 48th Annual Fernando Award hosted a Special Recognition Dinner in honor of Justice Armand Arabian who was awarded with the Fernando Award of 2006 as an appreciation for his Civic accomplishments.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF ARMENIAN STUDIES HONORS AMBASSADOR JOHN MARSHALL EVANS

March 12, 2007 — On March 4, 2007 The University of Southern California Armenian Studies Department held its Second Anniversary Gala Banquet at the Beverly Hilton. The banquet officially honored the former United States Ambassador to the Republic of Armenia for his dedicated services rendered to United States and Armenia.
